Farmers in Lagos State are asking the government and other groups for help to prevent floods from destroying their farms. They believe that with the right support, they can better manage the effects of climate change.

Mr. Sakin Agbayewa, the deputy chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, said that farmers need to work with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to get early warnings about floods.

He said, "We should be kept abreast of first-hand information that has to do with the changing weather patterns." He added, "We cannot stop floods but we can begin to do advocacy and train farmers ahead in preventing their farms from being overrun."

The farmers also asked for the government to help them get loans for things like irrigation systems and for the money to hire tractors.

Mr. Raphael Hunsa, the chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, stressed that while water is important for crops, floods can be prevented. He said, "But this cannot be done solely by the local farmers because it consumes money. That is where we need the government’s assistance to prevent flooding on our farms."

He also explained that farmers need money to create special ridges on their farms that can channel water away during floods and bring it back for irrigation when needed.

This is a great example of farmers being proactive. Instead of simply asking for help after a disaster, they are asking for the tools and training to prevent it from happening in the first place. This shows a good understanding of the challenges they face.

The farmers' appeal highlights a few important points:

The need for communication

Getting early warnings from an agency like NiMet is crucial for a country with a lot of farmers who are vulnerable to weather changes.

The financial barrier:

The farmers know what to do but need financial support to buy or rent the right equipment. This suggests that government aid in this area could have a huge impact.

The power of collaboration:

The farmers' request shows that they see themselves as partners with the government and other groups. This kind of teamwork is essential for tackling big issues like food security and climate change.
